Georgia On My Desk

Hooray! Our first Georgia regulations book, in all its re-designed glory, has just arrived at the office. Since starting my job here in August, this is the first book I have worked on that is entirely my design. I really feel I have created a more approachable design with an easier-to-follow layout.

Wow, that's some bass!

My 1st New Jersey Freshwater Fishing Digest

I've been at my new job since the middle of August, and am very excited that my first book is about to hit the shelves in New Jersey!

Picking up another designer's files (and making them your own) can be very challenging. Style sheets are so personal!

Most of my own personal style and (obsessive) attention to detail can be felt beyond the cover, and I really think that my designs and re-designs have improved the readability of this book. Readability seems particularly important when your job is to clearly convey the laws of the Environmental Protection Agency. Of course, all of the charts and fish identification images I have been working on have me wanting to design a logo, or come up with an ad campaign!

SplinkDesign — Up 'n Running!

I am very excited to announce that my online portfolio is largely complete. Although it is my plan to design the website in the near future, the easiest way for me to post my work for now is in blog format. (Oh, the elusive web-design class!)

I have posted a good volume of work, spanning from student projects to current ones, and will continue to keep it updated. The portfolio pieces are sortable by project type, type of software used, and workplace. As of this morning, I still need to add my favorite portolfio pieces — my custom invitations! I'll get them posted soon. Feel free to leave (nice) comments!

"Do Not Disturb" Signs

We have decided to give each employee at my workplace the opportunity to keep other office workers from pestering them. I was asked to create a few options for "Do Not Disturb" signs that can be hung on people's doors (or across the doorway of their cubicle). Here are the solutions I have offered to this seemingly boring design problem:

I do so love this font (Corinthia) and am determined to work it into a project here before I leave:

A very office-centric solution:

Someone recently brought a typewriter into the office to 'easily' type addresses on envelopes...only we can't find an ink cartridge for the darn thing. Still, I was inspired:

A solution with threatening overtones:

My favorite option:

We are voting on these options today.

Company Pumpkin Carving Contest 2007!

Today is Halloween, and that means it's time for my company's annual pumpkin carving contest. There was no theme last year and I arrived at the office to find that *two* of my co-workers were using the same idea as mine. I had to come up with a new idea fast and submitted this pumpkin in 2006:

It came in second to someone who "carved" their pumkin into pumpkin pie. How could anyone beat that??

This year had a "scary" theme, and few things are scarier to me than a hand injury. For as many surgeries and nasty medical things I've seen - none of which disturb me at all - there's something about a papercut that causes all of the blood to drain from my face. (This was exemplified a few months ago at work when I X-Acto'd my thumb and had to lay down so I wouldn't pass out!). So, here is my 2007 pumpkin submission:

Ice Cubicle

My company had an office/cubicle decorating contest to start off the holiday season this year. My "Ice Cubicle" earned me first place (as did, somehow, my shabby bowling score at the company holiday party). My cubicle is difficult to photograph because of it's location, so the photo's not so great. I used only found objects to create my chilly cube: old blue Christmas lights, old fuzzy silver garland, and a whole lot of aluminum foil. Already trying to think of something for next year!
